The value of a gemstone is defined by 4 characteristics also known as the “4 Cs” of gemstones. Clarity, Color and Cut are the factors, along with Carat, that chiefly determine the value of a stone. It is wrongly assumed that clarity alone is the most important factor determining the rarity of the stone. However, color and cut have a greater effect on the visual appearance of a gemstone. Following elaborates how the primary 4 factors determine what your fine jewelry is really worth.
Carat
Carat is the most popular measurement to value a gemstone. It is also the most misunderstood measure. One carat is subdivided into 100 points. Therefore a diamond measuring 100 points is 1 carat in weight. There are five carats in a gram. The bigger the diamond, the higher the price.

colour
Its the color, that gives character and beauty to the gemstone. However, in case of a diamond, it is the lack of color that commands value. A technique called compared grading, is used to rate the color of the stone. Grading is done by comparing the stone against "master stones" under either artificial or natural daylight. A Colorimeter can be used for grading but it is no substitute for an expert eye. The whiter the diamond, higher the price.
Cut
Its the cut, that gives radiance to the gemstone. The right cut adds brilliance to the stone by reflecting the light perfectly back from the top, to give shine to the stone. A poorly cut stone does not reflect the light back, thus resulting in a stone that looks lackluster. The angles and percentages determine the quality of the stone. Simply put, when looking at a gemstone, it must catch your eye. A properly cut gemstone commands higher price.

In this way, the above factors in a gemstone, command value and define its actual worth.
